Type the search words hauser family in Google to see where this home page comes up in the search results.  (As of 7/12/06 we come up #5 on the first page, up from #9 back in June of 2006, pretty good eh?)
Try it yourself or click here if you're not motivated to type

WHAT'S IN A NAME?
Here's something I grabbed off a commercial site selling family crests and what not. No telling how much of it's made up, but it sounds as good as any of the stories I've heard (or made up myself).
HAUSER
Origin: German
The distinguished surname Hauser is of German origin, and is a cognate of the Old English word "hus," meaning "house." The name may have been initially borne by someone who owned his own house, or by someone who had some connection to the most important house in the town of origin.
Spelling variations include: Hausen, Hauser, Hausendorf, Hausmann, Hausermann, Hausler, Hausener, Haussen, Haussenauer and many more.
First found in the Rhineland, where this family was a prominent contributor to the development of the district from ancient times.
Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: John Christian Haus and his wife Anna Catharina, who emigrated from the Palatinate to New York in 1710; Anna Rosina Haus, who settled in Pennsylvania in 1738.

HAUSER, IDAHO?
I wouldn't have believed it myself, but there's a town in NW Idaho right off Interstate 90. Had we used the Bicentennial bicycle route instead of topographical maps, I would have rode triumphantly into my namesake in the summer of 1980 on our cross country bicycle tour.

Hauser, Idaho map - there's even a Hauser Lake to go fishing or take a swim!

704 Hauser Street
Can  you guess who lived here? I'll give you a hint, this street is in Queens, NY. Need more clues? It was a ficticious address on a TV show. Still don't know? Well here's the last clue, the Stivic's lived with the wife's parents while Michael Stivic attended college. That's right, the Bunker family of "All in the Family" lived at 704 Hauser Street.

Arnold "Hauser" Schwarzenegger?
How on earth can our fine family name be linked with the body builder turned actor turned governor? Well when the screenwriter for the movie "Total Recall" was searching for two names for Arnold's split personality character, he came up with Douglas Quaid and Hauser. No first name that I can find, just Hauser. His Hauser side speaks the famous movie line to the Quaid character, "Now, this is the plan. Get your ass to Mars." Interestingly, one of his co-stars in the movie is actress Sharon Stone whom I met at a taping of the "Late Show with David Letterman" They pulled my wife out of her seat and plopped Ms. Stone down to do a promo for the show.

While we're on the subject of Hollywood Hausers, how about an actor/director by the name of Wings Hauser who has an acting son Cole Hauser. No info on how he got his nickname Wings.
